our blog gets recruiters thinking

I have been at #TruLondon for 2 days – digesting ideas, processes and quotes. I have been looking at new software, debating the use of social media and tech with other social media types and techies.

Whilst demo’ing some (very cute) recruitment software, the MD said the following:

Recruitment is one of the most inefficient industries in the world

Now it would be so easy for me to get on the band wagon about recruiters being glorified job fillers and make comments about them being unstrategic by nature, but I have worked in the sector for 12 years and respect it massively – and I haven’t come to #TruLondon to slate agency recruiters. But do you know, in many instances he’s right about inefficiencies!

We recently worked with a recruiter who admitted that they only placed 1/10 of the vacancies they had, and they suffered massively from a huge candidate “database” that was littered with unsuitable / unsearchable candidates.

Social media, CV parsing, CRM / ATS, internet plugins, totally integrated solutions, job board portals – what do you need to actually place a candidate? Most of the Directors of recruitment firms I work with didn’t need this stuff “in their day” – do we need it now?

There is more tech than ever available for recruiters to make them more efficient – and some recruiters have too much, so much so that it is a massive distraction. We often go into recruiters who have bought lots of lovely bits of kit and software over the years, only to find that there is no proof of ROI, consultants often just have a “feeling” that it works, and the Directors dare not turn it off for fear of loss of billings.

There’s a theme here…

There have been a few discussions on the future of recruitment at this event, but to be honest I have found them a little inconclusive – lots of discussion about the future of techin recruitment – but how will this affect the process?

If the MD of the CRM system I demo’d is right, and that Recruitment is one of the most inefficient industries in the world, then how is tech going to solve this (and it should) if there is so much to choose from?

I know my thoughts are that the process is the bit that often needs attention. It’s tempting to buy a bit of kit to speed it up. Poorly integrated and badly project managed solutions simply add to the inefficiency (and cost) of the process, reduces confidence and reduces morale.

If we spent more time reviewing the process itself, looking at the bits that generate clients and credible candidates – and matching the two for the long term, before getting giddy about tech that is simply the generation piece, then maybe the industry would be more efficient. We’d fill more than 1/10 of vacancies, have less rejections to handle, receive more calls from retained clients with vacancies, and manage the expectations of candidates that we have marketed a vacancy to that they cannot be placed in.
