I often get asked “what makes a great social media photo?”, so thought I’d share my thoughts on this via the blog. Your ideas are very welcome too.
What makes a bad social media photo?
Firstly here are a few tips on what I don’t think makes a good social media photo (sorry in advance if you fit into one of these categories…):
- I love the fact that you an avid equestrian, but if you are sat on your horse 20 yards away, I can’t see your face
- Same goes for snowboarding, fishing, skiing, sky diving etc… All great stuff, but the point (in my view of a social media photo) is to let me see the whites of your eyes…
- Do you have a drink in hand and a loose tie (read my mind!)
- Are you in a nightclub looking worse for wear?
- Are you with your girl friend / boyfriend / kids (why?)
- Have you “copped out” and are using your company logo? I feel uncomfortable connecting with a logo – it’s a human I want to talk to.
- Are you on the phone, sat in front of tech, or perhaps just generally performing in an office setting (sorry this makes me cringe a little)
- Major faux pas – are you a lady, perhaps on your wedding day / on hols, with a strapless top that once you have cropped your photo makes you look naked?
What makes a good social media photo?
I see the above types of shots a lot… so here are some of my thoughts on what makes a good photo that helps me get confidence in you:
- Boobs up! I always suggest a boobs up photo – ie. from the boobs up – I can then gauge what you are wearing (if anything…) and see your face and that glint in your eye
- Ideally square (thus no nightmare cropping!)
- Dress sense: Show me how you would look if we met for a coffee in a professional setting
- You would probably have a smile (or at least a hint of one) on your face
- I see some with the company brand in the background… can work, but if it detracts from your face, then leave it out.
- It really doesn’t need to be professionally shot – just makes sure that the camera you use gives decent quality and you don’t have anything sticking out of your head once you have cropped it down.
- And finally, does it really look like you?
Another thought – I always recommend using the same photo for all of your social media sites (maybe apart from your personal ones, eg. Facebook), thus if I follow you on Twitter and LinkedIn, Google+ I get to know you quicker and easier.
Your photo is your brand – think about it, use it well and it will really help people say “yes” when you want to connect and also for you to stay in their peripheral vision once you are connected – simples!
